THERE'S A SONG IN THE AIR

By
JOE PEARCE

In 2008 and 2009, Joe Pearce gave programs comprised entirely of songs, and they seemed to go over quite nicely. (Definition of Òquite nicelyÓ: Contracts were not taken out on him, nor has he been officially shunned. He still lives, he still breathes, and he still thinks. Well, he still lives and breathes, anyway.) Thus encouraged, he has decided to provide a third installment of same, this to follow very closely the previous models, to wit: Mostly, his program will consist of relatively serious fare (almost nothing far out), perhaps ranging from Bernstein and Romberg through Hahn and Gounod to Schubert and Buzzi-Peccia (and when did you last see those two names coupled?), but a good slice of it will be devoted to ÒlightÓ songs that used to be staples of many an operatic artistÕs concert or radio repertoire, but which have fallen into a kind of limbo as musical tastes changed, critics decried such material as not worthy of serious consideration, and the world simply ran out of classically-trained vocalists with the style and/or inclination to do them justice. As usual, he will provide no advance word here as to who will be heard, but approximately forty percent of his program will be made up of TENORS, so all will not be lost on our heathen element (they look to Joe for succor). Many truly great singers will be heard, including a few lesser-known ones for whom he proselytizes on a regular basis, and he will see to it that it is a lively outing. Also as usual, he will be handing out some kind of ÒhintÓ sheet at the programÕs start, but will identify the artists only just before, or just after, they are played, with a full printed program to be made available only at the programÕs conclusion. Hopefully, every attendee will also be receiving a free audio cassette copy of the selections heard to complement that printed program, but they will have to remain until the end of the presentation to receive either (Joe knows that some people will go through any agony to get something for nothing; indeed, heÕs counting on it!). Witnesses may be needed at his next commitment hearing, so do come!
